QUOTABLES: Mirko Cro Cop on UFC 128 KO loss to Brendan Schaub - "I feel as if someone stole something from me"

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

CroCop_150pc_3.jpg
"I feel as if someone stole something from me. I am disappointed with the outcome, but I congratulate Schaub and thank my fans for their support. It is clear that in this sport without hunger, desire and ambition there is no success, and it is clear also that I don't have this in me any more. [But] it seemed to me that I was [performing] better [than I have recently]... Ah, what am I talking about? If I was better, I'd have won... I was surprised by the [knockout] blow. It was just the same as against Frank Mir."

-Mirko Cro Cop talks to Croatian newspaper Jutarnji (translated by Fighter's Only) following his loss to Brendan Schaub at UFC 128.

Penick's Analysis: Cro Cop has been in this spot before, and we've heard similar comments from him before in the heat of the moment. Hopefully this time he follows through and realizes that it's probably for the best for him if he hangs up his gloves and calls it a career. He's done some great things in the sport, and he's been someone that fans have always enjoyed watching, but after a number of brutal knockouts those same fans don't want to see him continue taking punishment like that.

UFC making Brock Lesnar vs. Shane Carwin from UFC 116 available for free on Facebook

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

LesnarBrock_WK150_65.jpg
The UFC is making the bout between Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin from UFC 116 available for free on Facebook, and fans can view it right now at Facebook.com/UFC.

The bout is being made available as a "thank you" to fans for reaching five million "likes" of their Facebook page.

The classic main event fight in Las Vegas was Lesnar's first in a year after being sidelined by a battle with diverticulitis that almost ended his fighting career. Carwin brought an undefeated 12-0 record into the fight, and seemed poised to capture the UFC Heavyweight Championship in the first round when he dropped Lesnar and nearly finished him off.

Lesnar survived, however, and in the second round took Carwin to the canvas, submitting him with an arm triangle choke shortly thereafter.

Bellator 37 Results: Reis, Pitbull, Straus, And Foster Move On

CONCHO, Okla. (March 19, 2011) ? The Bellator Season 4 Featherweight Tournament fighters put on an action-packed show at the Lucky Star Casino as Wilson Reis, Patricio ?Pitbull? Freire, Kenny Foster and Daniel Straus battled their way to the semifinals and one step closer to earning a title shot against Bellator Featherweight Champ Joe Warren.

Kenny Foster pulled off the upset of the night, becoming the first featherweight to move on to the semifinals in a true testament to tournament-style MMA. Avoiding an early takedown, Foster landed a knee to Erik Larkin?s face, opening a cut above the four-time NCAA D1 All-American?s eye. Foster smelled blood and outwrestling Larkin on the ground to maintain the top position, where he locked in a guillotine choke, forcing an end to the fight at 3:15 in Round 1.

Bellator veteran Daniel Straus and undefeated Argentinean Nazareno Malegarie took to the cage next, putting on a gritty 15-minute MMA show. Straus looked to be in trouble on the ground throughout the fight as Malegarie attempted several submissions. At the end of the three rounds, it was Straus? dominating performance on his feet that caught the attention of the judges. Straus via a unanimous decision earned his way to the semifinals in a hard-fought battle.

Next up, Wilson Reis brought Zac George to the ground and forced him to give up his back early with a flurry of hammerfists. The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu specialist Reis earned his third trip to the featherweight semifinals and ended George?s six-game win streak with a rear-naked choke at 2:09 in Round 1.

All eyes were on Season 2 featherweight standouts Patricio ?Pitbull? Freire and Georgi ?Insane? Karakhanyan as they closed out the night?s fights. In Round 1 action, Pitbull lifted Karakhanyan off his feet but Georgi defended with a guillotine attempt. The fighters battled through Round 2 mostly on their feet with Freire appearing to a have a slight edge in the momentum. It was all Freire in Round 3 as the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt dropped Karakhanyan to the mat with a left hook to the chin, paving the way for a relentless ground-and-pound assault that ended the fight with a TKO at 0:56 in Round 3.

?The featherweight?s put on spectacular performances tonight at Bellator 37,? said Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney. ?Fans have the opportunity to witness amazing fights when you let fighters control their own destiny, and I?m thrilled with the start to our fourth season on MTV2.?

Official Main Card Results:

Kenny Foster def. Eric Larkin by guillotine submission [3:15, Round 1]
Daniel Straus def. Nazareno Malegarie by unanimous decision [29-29, 29-28, 29-28]
Wilson Reis def. Zac George by rear-naked choke submission [2:09, Round 1]
QUOTABLES: Alistair Overeem thinks UFC's purchase of Strikeforce could be the best thing that ever happened to the sport of MMA

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

LogoStrikeforce2010_105_120.png
"I was shocked when I read [about Strikeforce being sold to Zuffa], but I'm very excited. It's a very big upset in the MMA world, and the fighting world in general. But yeah, my first thought was, I'm excited... It was a very big surprise to me and to everybody. The gentlemen did a very good job of keeping the big secret. I didn't see it coming. I didn't see it coming at all.

It depends. I'm a positive guy. I see things through a positive lens. It can be really, really the best thing [that] ever happened to the sport, if it's used positive, and I see that happening. If it's used negative, then it's going to be a downfall. But I don't see that happening. I see this as a good thing, a good development, so I see the sport growing.

We're going to have to wait and see how it works out. The fans are going to get to see the fights that are most appealing to them. I think this is what the sport needs to grow, because the sport has grown rapidly, but it's still not there yet. It still needs to grow bigger. I think [UFC president] Dana [White] wants this and I know I want this as well. We want the fights to be worldwide known. We want everybody worldwide to talk about these fights, like in the old days with Muhammad Ali and [Mike] Tyson, and we're not there yet. To get there, there's still some work to be done and I think Dana's working on that.

For me, I'm a fighter. I want to show the fans exciting fights. I want to go for the knockout. For me, I'm tied down in the Strikeforce Grand Prix. That is my objective for the moment. This is my time to show that I'm number one in this tournament. All the politics talk, I'm not a head of an MMA organization. I know leading a business like that has a lot of responsibilities, a lot of headache, so I can't answer that question for you [of when I might fight someone from the UFC]... I'm happy that I'm not in their shoes. I'm happy that I have the simple life of a fighter."

-Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion Alistair Overeem talks to Ariel Helwani at MMAFighting.com and reacts to Zuffa's purchase of Strikeforce and how he feels things will work out.

Penick's Analysis: For all of the remaining fighters in the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix, this purchase of the organization by Zuffa could be big for them and the fans. Depending on how the rest of the field and the tournament plays out, along with their contracts, many of them could make their way to the UFC. Overeem is right at the top of the list of guys that fans want to see against fighters in the UFC, and depending on how things play out over the next year or so, he could make his way there sooner rather than later. Once again, no one knows for sure how things are going to play out here, but Overeem in the UFC is one thing that fans will want to see as soon as possible after this acquisition.

ENNIS: UFC 128 review and quick thoughts - Jon Jones is fantastic, Urijah Faber cements spot and more

By: Shawn Ennis, MMATorch Senior Columnist

Staff06Ennis_130_9.jpg
Overall this was a solid show, if it was lacking in multiple storylines. I'd give it a score of 8/10, with the main event getting it that high.

The story of the night was obviously the ascension of Jon Jones to the light heavyweight throne. He has looked good enough to think that no one can beat him at 205. But I think we just need to slow down a bit before we start anointing him the leader of his own era. We all saw how quickly someone solved the puzzle of Lyoto Machida, and though I think Jones is better, I'm not ready to say he's never going to lose.

First things first, Jones will steamroll Rashad Evans. It's anyone's guess who gets the shot after that, but I wouldn't mind seeing a Machida-Rampage rematch for a title shot after they both win their next fights. The positive for the UFC is that there are plenty of big-name opponents for Jones to fight before he reaches the status of a GSP/Anderson Silva.

And by the way, I think the potential of a superfight with Silva is pretty slim. While it's attractive on paper, it would involve Silva moving to 205, which he has said he doesn't want to do on a permanent basis, and it would also involve Jones having cleaned out the division (or at least one would imagine). By the time that happens, and if it happens, who knows how old Silva will be, and whether he'll still be undefeated in the Octagon? A lot of things can happen between now and what's potentially down the road. It's easy to get ahead of ourselves, and I don't mean to throw cold water on the excitement because Jones is very, very good. But let's all just take a deep breath and wait for his first title defense, shall we?

If we're looking at other newsworthy happenings, there's not a ton. Urijah Faber likely cemented himself as the coach opposite Dominick Cruz for the next season of The Ultimate Fighter, which will hopefully feature some high-level bantamweights and featherweights. Eddie Wineland was certainly game, and I think his takedown defense was a whole lot better than Faber or a lot of other people expected. Hopefully he'll be back and continue to put on great fights.

Jim Miller looked great in his destruction of the durable Kamal Shalorus, but I'm not quite as infatuated with Miller as a lot of people are. I think it's a good thing that Edgar and Maynard are going at it for the third time, because it gives the division some time to sort itself out so that we can decide who the next contender is. By then (I imagine) it'll be someone out of the Guida-Pettis-Miller-Guillard-Sherk mix. Maybe. The point is that it's okay for the UFC to have some time to anoint a new contender, and I'd like to see Jim Miller beat someone with some cred before I go crazy.

Some disjointeed thoughts about the rest of the card: Luis Cane is a killer when he's not fighting southpaws; Edson Barboza is going to inflict a lot of pain on people as he ascends to the top (and he will ascend to the top - you heard it here first); I'm glad Cro Cop is done in the UFC, because I want to remember his Pride days and not his days against Frank Mir and Brendan Schaub.

Speaking of Schaub, he's an incredible athlete, and he's got a lot of upside, but he's still missing something. A better ground game? A more sturdy chin? I don't know for sure, but I'm not feeling it just yet with him. Nate Marquardt took care of business, but that's pretty much all you can say about that fight.

So to sum up - Jones looked fantastic, and he is fantastic. But let's not go crazy just yet.

Coker interview: Strikeforce boss uncertain about Daley, Fedor and Barnett in the UFC

Scott Coker, the other guy in the UFC's purchase of Strikeforce, sat down for a lengthy interview with HDNet's Bas Rutten. Coker was grilled on many of the hot button issues that last Monday's conference call never hit on.

Rutten asked the Strikeforce CEO if he thinks fans will ever see Josh Barnett, Paul Daley or Fedor Emelianenko in the UFC. Coker said he didn't know (11:35 mark), but added that he hoped all three continued to fight with Strikeforce.

Other interesting points included:

Coker confirmed that the deal between Zuffa and SVSE came together quickly. He only informed Showtime of the sale one day before the news leaked on Mar. 12.

He denied the rumors that Josh Barnett will be removed from the Strikeforce heavyweight Grand Prix and replaced by Shane Carwin.

The Strikeforce boss joked about his first meetings with the UFC brass talking about Zuffa's 25-person marketing and P.R. staff. He brought along his two employees in those positions (4:40 mark).

Coker is excited about the new resources behind Strikeforce and growth possibilities which include a goal of pay-per-view by the end of 2011.

Surprisingly, even with a roster of 150-plus fighters, Coker says "business as usual" also includes signing new fighters in the future (9:00 mark).

Read into it anyway you'd like - Coker was asked if the purchase by UFC was a good or bad day, he answered by it's a reality (9:30 mark).

Showtime got the call the day before the news leaked 11 days ago, but Coker still hasn't had a chance to speak with M-1 promotions, Fedor's management team (13:25 mark).

Hopefully, Coker is involved in the MMA business at the highest level for years to come. He's definitely an asset, who puts the fans first. He did an amazing job turning a regional promotion, which held its first big fight in Apr. of 2009, into something worth buying for an estimated $40 million less than two years later.

Video - Jon Jones: On The Brink Of Mega Stardom - Can He Deliver At UFC 128?

By John Moody
Jon Jones has basically been anointed the UFC “golden child” with a crush of positive press and his own reality show on Spike TV ahead of UFC 128 in Newark, NJ. Can he perform to that level of hype on Saturday night, against Shogun Rua? That is the question, which will decide if [...]

UFC 128 RESULTS: Jon Jones destroys "Shogun" Rua to become youngest champ in UFC history; teammate Rashad Evans is next

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Jon_Jones_180_10.jpeg
Jon "Bones" Jones lived up to all the hype on Saturday night at UFC 128 in New Jersey, defeating Mauricio "Shogun" Rua by TKO in a one-sided fight to become the youngest champion in UFC history.

Jones took the fight to Shogun from the opening, throwing a flying knee as they began the fight. He continued to outland Shogun on the feet, and took him to the ground. Jones did some damage on the ground, but Shogun was able to get onto his feet. Jones then continued the assault in the striking game, hurting Shogun with combinations and kicks.

In the second round it was much of the same, with Jones again taking over the striking game, avoiding Shogun's offense, and bringing the fight to the ground. But it was the third where Jones ended things.

After landing some big elbows on the ground, Jones hurt Shogun badly after the champ got to his feet. He cracked him as they got back up, chased him down to the cage, landed a big punch and then dropped him with a knee to the face. As Shogun fell to the ground, referee Herb Dean came in and called an end to the fight. Shogun laid on his back for several moments as doctors and cageside officials tended to him.

Jones will now meet his friend and training partner Rashad Evans for the belt, and the fight they both said a few weeks back would not happen is happening. A very serious Jones said simply "this is my dream, and I've got to do what I need to do."

Penick's Analysis: Barring injury, I just don't know that I can see anyone in this division defeating Jon Jones. He just destroyed Shogun in a fight that wasn't even competitive. That was by far the most experienced and most dangerous fighter Jones has ever faced, and he made it look easy. Now, even though Evans has trained with him and knows him well, there's just nothing I see Evans being able to do to take Jones out. This was a fantastic win for Jones, and a big statement to the MMA world. Jon Jones is very much the real deal, and as the youngest champion in UFC history, he's got a long, long career ahead of him.

Jerez Circuit To Host Spanish MotoGP Round Through 2016

After the financial difficulties that have recently dogged the Jerez Circuit, at last there is some good news. Today, the Andalucian State Government announced that it would be underwriting the Spanish MotoGP round at Jerez for the next five years, guaranteeing its future until 2016.

The future of the race had been uncertain. Despite being probably the best attended MotoGP event, and one that rates as one of the must-visit races for MotoGP fans around the world, a financial dispute with contractors had threatened to disrupt the event. As reported earlier this month, the assets of the circuit have been frozen by a local court, after the circuit failed to make outstanding payments owed to the consortium that carried out construction work on the track to improve safety in 2005. That dispute is still unresolved, though information on the status of negotiations is scarce, a situation which has raised the hackles of local politicians, though the event enjoys the backing of almost every party in the region, due to the publicity the event generates.
